Azam Khan Asks Minorities to Unite
Samajwadi Party leader, Azam Khan, today appealed to the minority muslim community to remain united in the face of “victimisation by fascist forces”. Khan reminded the gathering at a SP rally in Rampur in Uttar Pradesh on April 10th that the community comprised one fifth of the total population and was capable to face fascist forces if it strengthened unity and generated a feeling of oneness.
“What crime was committed by members of the minority community for which we were victimized in Gujarat and Muzzaffarnagar?”, Khan questioned. Khan also clarified his remarks related to the Kargil war saying he had never claimed that the war was won by Muslim soldiers alone. He added that soldiers of all communities had sacrificed their lives in the war.
Other political parties had slammed Khan for allegedly saying it was “Muslim soldiers who fought for India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil war against Pakistan”. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav, who was present at the Rampur meeting defended Khan, saying vested political interests were unnecessarily creating a controversy over Khan’s statements.
