Shakila, a vegetable seller from a village in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, is holding an exhibition of her collages at the CIMA Art Gallery in Kolkata. The exhibition, titled ‘ The Master and his Disciple – works by B R Panesar&Shakila’ will be on till May 17th. Along with Shakila’s insightful collages on the vagaries of life, the exhibition is also displaying works of her mentor the Late B R Panesar. Paneswar recognised Shakila’s talent while she was a little girl, accompanying her mother to the Taltala market to sell vegetables. He was impressed with her creations made from colourful bits of paper given to her from him. Panesar, a statistician by profession, was himself making collages at the time. He inspired and groomed Shakila to become a collage artist in her own right.Shakila’swork have been exhibited at several international exhibitions subsequently. Paneswar died early this year. Neither Panesar nor Shakil have any formal training in art.
