Ethic Minority Population: China has 8.49% of officially recognized minority groups. The People’s Republic of Chinarecognizes 55 ethnic minority groups. Also besides the officially recognized ethnic minority groups, there people who privately classify themselves as members of unrecognized ethnic groups (such as Jewish, Tuvan, Oirat and Ili Turki).
Ethnic minorities in China are the non-Han Chinese population and the thirteen Taiwanese Aborigines.But these figures do not count the population of Hongkong and Macau
By definition, these ethnic minority groups, together with the Han majority, make up the greater Chinese nationality known as ZhonghuaMinzu. Chinese minorities alone are referred to as “ShaoshuMinzu”.
Chinese Government to Offer Cash Rewards for Mixed Mariages
Xinjiang´s county government is offering cash rewards for mixed marriages to counter militancy. In China´s Muslim-majority Xinjiang city the local government is offering cash rewards and welfare benefits for marriages between minority ethnic groups and majority Hans to promote unity in the province hit by Islamic militancy. Xinjiang´s Qiemo county government announced an annual cash reward of 10,000 yuan (USD 1,627) for five years for mixed marriage couples besides welfare benefits but skeptics still argue that it may not work.
